Academic Coaching for Every Kind of Learner
Personalized Academic Coaching Built Around How Your Child's Brain Works
You’ve watched the homework battles. The missed assignments. The hours of studying that never seem to translate into better grades. At OptiMind Educational Strategies, our academic coaching helps your child understand how their executive function skills work, build real skills, and turn frustration into forward motion, virtually, from anywhere in Maryland, DC, Northern Virginia, or across the country.
When School Feels Like an Uphill Climb
The Warning Signs of a Student Who's Falling Behind
You’ve probably tried the sticky notes, the reward charts, the “just sit down and focus” conversations. None of it sticks, and it’s not for lack of trying, on your part or your child’s.
You might be noticing:
- Assignments started late or never turned in at all
- A student who can’t seem to break a big project into steps
- Hours of studying with little to no improvement in grades
- Meltdowns or shutdowns the moment homework comes out
- A child who says they “just can’t focus,” no matter how hard they try
Left unaddressed, these patterns tend to compound. A missed worksheet in October can turn into a failing progress report by winter break. And somewhere along the way, your child quietly decides they’re just not good at school.
None of this means your child lacks the intelligence or drive to succeed. They simply haven’t been taught the skills that make learning manageable, and those skills can be taught — research from Harvard University’s Center on the Developing Child confirms these are learnable skills at any age, not fixed traits.
Academic Coaching That Goes Beyond Tutoring
Coaching Students With Executive Skills Deficits, Not Just Better Study Tips
Is Academic Coaching the Same as an Executive Function Tutor?
At OptiMind, executive function coaching is at the core of everything we do, and academic coaching is how we apply that work to school. It focuses on the skills that affect how students manage their work, learn, and show what they know, including study strategies when a student needs them.
Those challenges don’t always show up in every class. A student might excel in some subjects and struggle in others because of what each one demands. They may have great ideas but struggle to organize and sequence their thoughts in a writing-heavy class. They may understand the math but lose track of steps or make impulsive errors during calculations. Or they may understand the material but have no idea how to prepare for a test.
That’s why we look beyond the grade to find where the breakdown is happening. Depending on what your child needs, we may work on:
- Planning, organization, and time management
- Task initiation and follow-through
- Breaking down and managing multi-step work
- Organizing and sequencing thoughts
- Working memory, attention, and self-monitoring strategies
- Effective study and test-preparation strategies
- Building systems that support greater independence
Your child may not need more help understanding the material. They may need the skills and strategies to show what they already know, more consistently.

What to Expect From Academic Coaching Sessions
From First Session to Greater Independence
Academic coaching isn’t limited to one subject or assignment. We start with what your child is trying to accomplish and where they’re getting stuck, then work on two fronts at once: strengthening internal skills like planning, prioritizing, and following through, and building the external systems that support those skills while they’re still developing.
For many students, that includes learning how to study. Many students “look over” their notes and assume that’s studying. We teach them how learning and retention actually work, so studying becomes a skill they can practice and improve rather than something they hope happens by being near the material.
Each session typically includes:
- A check-in on current assignments, deadlines, and challenges
- Direct instruction in one skill, such as backward planning a project
- A simple explanation of why the strategy works, so your child can use it on their own
- Hands-on practice organizing an assignment, project, or study plan
- A clear plan for the week ahead, with built-in accountability
We’re not here to do the work for your child. We’re here to teach and practice executive function and study skills using their real schoolwork, and to help them build the structures to manage it more independently, even as support from parents and teachers decreases.

Academic Coaching FAQs
Does my child need a diagnosis to start academic coaching?
No. Academic coaching is open to any student who’s struggling to keep up, stay organized, or show what they know, with or without a formal diagnosis. We start by identifying where the challenge is coming from, then work on the executive function skills, study strategies, or both that your child needs.
Is academic coaching the same as tutoring?
Not quite. Tutoring typically focuses on the content of one subject. Academic coaching is one part of our executive function coaching, where we apply that work to school. We start by identifying what’s getting in your child’s way, whether that’s an executive function skill, a study strategy, or a missing structure, and then build a plan to address it using their real schoolwork.
Can academic coaching help with procrastination?
How long does academic coaching typically last?
It depends on the gap between where your child’s skills are when we start and where they want to be. Some students reach their goals in a semester. Others continue longer as they build and refine skills or take on new challenges, like a harder course load or the transition to high school or college.
Are sessions virtual?
Can academic coaching work alongside an IEP, 504 plan, or therapy?
Absolutely. Coaching often complements school accommodations, such as an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or 504 plan, and therapy by focusing on practical, day-to-day application.
